MMCA x Tallinn Art Hall residency open call 2026

Tallinn Art Hall invites applications for a ten-week artist residency at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Changdong in Seoul, South Korea, from 30 September – 9 December 2026.

About the residency

MMCA Changdong Residency was established in 2002 with the aim of fostering creative exchange between Korean and international artists, curators, and researchers. Each year in September, MMCA publishes an open call for international residents who are welcomed in three cohorts in spring, summer, and autumn. Previous participants from Estonia include Siim Preiman and Mari-Leen Kiipli. In collaboration with MMCA and with support from the Estonian Ministry of Culture, Tallinn Art Hall is offering one residency place for autumn 2026.

MMCA Changdong Residency has eleven live-in studios, two exhibition spaces, and an outdoor workspace. The residency is located an hour from central Seoul by public transport, close to Buk-Seoul Museum of Art and Photo SeMA, with plenty of amenities nearby. The successful candidate will be in residence alongside up to six other international artists or researchers as well as several artists from Korea. Together, residents participate in an open studio and a group exhibition of their previous or current work.

Who we are looking for

  • A demonstrable connection to Estonia e.g. Estonian citizenship or residency in Estonia
  • Fluency in English
  • A minimum of one year’s professional experience (e.g. one year since completing a bachelor’s or master’s art programme, or one year since the first presentation of your work in professional art circles)

This opportunity is for individuals only.

What you will receive

  • A grant of €6000 to cover round-trip airfare and daily living expenses and transport
  • Live-in studio with shared bathroom and kitchen
  • The opportunity to develop your practice in a supportive environment
  • The chance to expand your network within Korea and internationally
  • Introduction to the local art scene through openings, studio visits, and field trips organised by residency staff
