| Tallinn Art Hall is delighted to announce that Tõnis Jürgens has been selected for the inaugural MMCA × Tallinn Art Hall residency, supported by the Estonian Ministry of Culture. A shortlist of candidates was drawn up by a panel comprising artist and former MMCA resident Mari-Leen Kiipli, alongside Tallinn Art Hall curators Andrew Cummings and Siim Preiman. The final selection was made by MMCA.
Jürgens will be in residence at MMCA Residency Changdong, part of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, in Seoul from 30 September to 9 December 2026.
Jürgens says: “I’m delighted and grateful to have been selected by the MMCA committee. I hope to use my time at the residency to complete some unfinished projects, explore the local wilderness and learn how to tell stories as they do in Korean cinema.”
Heejung Park, manager of MMCA Residency Changdong, says: “We selected Tõnis Jürgens for the clarity and depth of his ongoing artistic research into sleep tracking, surveillance capitalism and moving-image installation. His proposal presents a clear plan to further develop both his doctoral research and artistic practice during the residency, while actively engaging with Seoul’s contemporary art, film and sound communities.”
Tõnis Jürgens (1989) is an artist, writer and cinema projectionist. Working primarily with film, essay and spatial installation, he explores the limits of datafication. His recent practice examines the relationship between sleep and the im/measurability of everyday life. Jürgens received the Eduard Wiiralt Scholarship in 2022 and was awarded the Cosmopolis Prix at the Objectif Vidéo Nice art festival in 2024. In 2026, he was an artist-in-residence at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels. He is a doctoral candidate and guest lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn.
As part of the exchange, an artist from South Korea will undertake a residency with Tallinn Art Hall in summer 2027. Further details will be announced in due course.
