Interpretation Celebration

We adapt to all age groups from toddlers to seniors.

Subject: Various possibilities of experiencing and interpreting artworks

Arts vocabulary: printmaking, painting, photography, video, sculpture, installation and various art techniques represented in the exhibition

Duration 60-90 minutes, depending on the wishes of the group

Spring Exhibition brings us an abundance of ideas and techniques. This allows us to experiment with different ways of interpreting artworks, from theoretic to playful meaning making. Through creating personal connections with the artists, we aim to encourage students to explore art galleries independently. We use the VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) method, which improves critical thinking skills through teacher-facilitated discussions of visual images. We challenge ourselves: in how many different ways can we experience art? We will stand really close to the artwork and then view it from afar. We will have our eyes wide open and squinting. What happens when we look at it only for a few seconds? What changes when we immerse ourselves in it for longer?

We will give voice to the artworks by letting them move us. Practical creative assignment: participants can recreate their favorite artwork in their chosen medium – as a dance or a poem, through sound or drawing.

NB! Also suitable for playful adults.

Our gallery is open to the general public from 11am to 6pm. As Kunstihoone is following 2+2 and 25% capacity guidelines, we are not able to accommodate groups larger than 9 participants during opening hours. We welcome (larger than 9) student groups before opening from 9 – 11am (Tuesday to Friday (ENG), Monday to Friday (RUS).

Art and outreach

Age group 13+

Subject: conceptual art, proportions and interpersonal relations

Specialised vocabulary: proportion, installation, social art, symbol, illustration, art object, conceptual art

Duration: 60–90 minutes depending on the wishes of the group

Flo Kasearu uses different means of expression, treating art in a playful, challenging and conceptual way. Displayed in the exhibition hall are illustrations of surprising details that have irritated people, immersive video works as well as installations of symbolic chair-like objects and houseplants. They each express one aspect of the general idea of the exhibition: domestic violence and the possible ways to overcome it unfold in chapters throughout the exhibition.

We will study Kasearu’s conceptual artistic techniques and experience the way important stories can be told with the help of proportions. We can find out what plants have in common with humans and what happens when something small seems a big deal, or vice versa. We will also explore how to notice and support each other more. As a practical creative task, we will tell stories about our own lives, consciously using proportions.

Participation with an exhibition ticket.

You can also experience this programme remotely. Tallinn Art Hall’s educational programmes are now available on our virtual platform via Zoom. All you need is a good internet connection and the thirst to explore the exciting world of contemporary art! The lessons are guided by our tutors, and our comprehensive virtual overview of the exhibition will make you feel as if you were physically present in the Art Hall! We will tailor our practical creative task according to your preferences. See more at virtuaal.kunstihoone.ee. Our fee for the virtual educational programme is 30 euros.

Dimensions and Proportions

Age group 5–12

Subject: proportions and interpersonal relations

Specialised vocabulary: proportion, installation, social art, symbol, illustration, art object

Duration: 60–90 minutes, depending on the wishes of the group

Flo Kasearu’s art is both immersive and playful at the same time. The artist uses various means of expression, from drawings to video works and spatial installations. For example, we can see illustrations of surprising little things that have irritated people, the quiet power struggle of parents unfolding on the video screen, and dried houseplants that have invaded the exhibition space.

During the Dimensions and Proportions art workshop, younger students will learn how to use proportions to tell important stories about domestic violence and find the way out of it. For example, we will get an idea of the changing ‘game rules’ between people when looking at the disproportionate markings on the games court. We will find out what the dozens of houseplants displayed in the exhibition hall have in common with people and what happens when someone regards something very small as a big deal, or vice versa. We will bring art to life with our movement and position in the exhibition space. Sad and thought-provoking stories lead us to ask how to notice and support each other more. The session also includes a practical creative task of creating images with eloquent proportions.

Layered landscape

Age group: 5+

Focus: physical and meaningful layers of art
Art vocabulary: texture, landscape painting, modernism

Duration: 60-90 minutes depending on the preference of the group

In the educational programme of “Layered Landscape” we take a look at the physical and metaphorical layers of the works displayed. We will take time to enjoy the masterful texture of Olev Subbi’s paintings and discover deep connections with his life and history. Nazim Ünal Yilmaz will show us how a painting can be simultaneously contemporary and inspired by the treasures of art history. In Maya Watanabe’s video, the soil – an essential part of a landscape – literally contains information. Ad Minoliti, on the other hand, creates a parallel world in her pictures, much like Olev Subbi. In the practical creative part of the lesson, we will create a layered landscape, focusing colors, textures and memories. Finally, we will place our works in the context of the exhibition “Olev Subbi: Landscapes from the End of Times”.

SCHOOL OF EMPATHY

How do we relate to people with disabilities? How do we take each others’ needs and possibilities into account even if ours are different? What happens when there is a disruption in communication? What could be better for exploring different points of view than a contemporary art exhibition! Curators Christine Sun Kim and Niels Van Tomme have brought together the works of 10 artists around the world (EST, DK, UK, USA).

In the educational programme titled “School of Empathy” we will explore the artworks and the world that opens up through them. The practical part of the lesson invites participants to think like designers, architects and warm-hearted people: we will design a freely chosen concrete place to be “universally accessible”.

Our educational programmes…

…are also available in English, see more HERE. For additional information and registration contact publik@kunstihoone.ee.
